Southampton Regular Sen. Frank Lautenberg Dies at 89

Senator and wife Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg spent time in Water Mill.

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat and a frequent visitor to Southampton, died Monday at the age of 89.

Lautenberg, who was the only remaining World War II veteran in the Senate, is survived by his wife, Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg, who owns a home in Water Mill and has had her photographs hung in local Hamptons art galleries.

According to a statement from Sen. Lautenberg's press office, the New Jersey native succumbed to complications from viral pneumonia at 4:02 a.m. at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell.

Last summer, the six-term senator announced that he would not seek another term.

The highlights of Lautenberg's career as an elected official included his work on public transit, environmental issues and gun control issues in New Jersey and on Capitol Hill.

In addition to his wife, Lautenberg is survived by his six children and their spouses, Ellen Lautenberg and Doug Hendel, Nan and Joe Morgart, Josh and Christina Lautenberg, Lisa and Doug Birer, Danielle Englebardt and Stuart Katzoff, Lara Englebardt Metz and Corey Metz; and 13 grandchildren.
