Evelyn Alice Simmons Dies at 79

Simmons was an animal lover who gave all types of pets a home.

Evelyn Alice Simmons, of Southampton, died Sunday. Born May 22, 1932, in Roxbury, Conn., she was 79.

Simmons married the late Ross H. Simmons in 1949 and they lived together on the East End for the remainder of their years. She had a passionate and enthusiastic zest for life that inspired all her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and adventure and often embarked on both with barely a moment's notice.

A devout animal lover, Simmons was known to take in all manner of pets in need of a home. Recently, she could always be found with her newest canine friend, Diablo, by her side.

Simmons is survived by six children: Karen Smith, of Southampton; Ronald Simmons, of Flanders; Lynn Gilmore, of Riverhead; Kenneth Simmons, of Southampton; Gail Rosante, of Westhampton Beach; and Deborah Dougherty, of Hampton Bays. She also is survived by her brothers, Elliot, Morris, Nelson and Dennis as well as sisters Gail, Joyce and Laurie; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at . A funeral is planned Thursday at 10 a.m. at with the Rev. Donald Havrilla officiating.
