Yoga for EVERY Body - A Love Story in Southampton

A local love story and how yoga has been brought to the lives of the campers and staff at The Southampton Fresh Air Home.

I am sitting here in my summer residence, of the past 19 summers, as I type. The Southampton Fresh Air Home, born in 1901, hosts a residential summer camp program for campers ages 8 to 18. This is a highly sought after camp to attend for many young people. To qualify you must be physically disabled.

My husband, David, and I met here as camp counselors in the summer of 1994. He from England, and me Long Island. It was a fate-filled meeting, we truly believe this. As we grew with the camp, the camp grew with us. After 19 summers, it is our home, it is our family, it is where we are honored and blessed to be able to raise our 3 young children.

Up to 10 years ago David and I worked together here each summer. Our first child, Jack, was born and it was decided I would "stay-home" with him. David has remained camp director ever since. In 2006, with now a second son, Sammy, I decided I would like to become a trained yoga teacher. After having my own yoga practice for several years, it's just something that felt right...meant to be.

Certified to teach by the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, it was a perfect fit for me to bring yoga to the campers and staff at The Southampton Fresh Air Home! For the past seven summers I have had the absolute pleasure to be here teaching everyone. It is a gift from me to them but REALLY I am the one receiving so much!

Throughout the summer, the campers and staff are taught on-site. I also offer for the staff to come for free to any of the classes I teach throughout the summer.

In 2008, I opened Lindsey's Place, in Savannah, GA. I do the same for the campers there a couple of times each year.

The campers and staff are so wonderful! They each bring their own gifts and present them to me and my family (now of five with daughter Lily). I feel very honored and truly blessed! I hope they all realize they are a part of my family and are helping to shape the future of my children. For this alone, what we receive is priceless. Teaching yoga is the least I can do in return!

Well, maybe with some extra time...I should offer haircuts! LOL.
