The New Work Ethic in America

My question is this: How does one place so much value on what they want if they are not willing to put the effort into getting it?

Never before have I seen a more spoiled and sense of entitlement mentality than recently when interviewing potential employees for a recent restaurant project.

Upon a recent open call recruitment, there was about 100 respondents who were applying, or looking for work I presumed. There were actually quite a few capable, competent and qualified individuals who had looked good on paper. And that is where the disparities ended.

With second calls waiting, and the interviews progressing, I noticed a trend building that was becoming very discerning. The amount of personalities and egos that were coming out, and being presented upon questioning, had me left with a feeling that none of these individuals had a clue what a job means today. The ethics and values of what applicants held important were nothing compared to the characteristics of what I have learned over the years, and given to me by my parents. The number of those with juggling acts of schedules, time restrictions of those who think a full day of work is a four-hour shift (really?), and the audacity of some who have the "what will you do for me?" attitude, was incredible and consistent. None of them were hungry, ambitious professionally; but at the same time placing value on money.

Are we really turning into the next generation who believes everything should be given to them on a silver platter?

My resolution was this: With the employment pool to draw from in despair, I settled to take on a challenge that is proving to become so much more productive than I ever imagined. I have decided to hire those with not so much the ability, but with the potential and the desire to learn and become better. Gone is the mentality of entitlement and the ego of expectations. I am sure and enthusiastic that this is the right decision, and have the utmost confidence in the crew that I hired to be able to the job ...
