"NEVER HEARD OF LABOR DAY"

"Never heard of Labor Day" There is a story about heiress Florence Vanderbilt Twombly who had a magnificent 100 room Gilded Age mansion called Florham at Madison, New Jersey. Most weekends Mrs. Twombly gave large weekend parties with many guests. One weekend, which included the Labor Day holiday weekend, the guests were surprised to be roused by the butler on Monday and encouraged to pack their bags. The guests told the Butler he must be mistaken, since this was Labor Day and they were expecting to enjoy another day at the palatial estate. The butler went to speak to Mrs. Twombly and told her about this. He returned to the guests and told them Mrs. Twombly said she had NEVER heard of Labor Day!
