WPPB 88.3 Turns 1

East End's public radio station has its first anniversary.

One year ago Thursday, and became WPPB as completed its acquisition of the radio station from Long Island University.

WPPB broadcasts from 71 Hill Street in Southampton Village, reaching across eastern Long Island and to coastal Connecticut. The radio station was originally housed at Southampton College in Shinnecock Hills, but after Long Island University sold the campus to Stony Brook University in 2006 and it was rebranded as , WLIU was forced to start looking for a new home. Then Long Island University announced in August 2009 that it would stop funding the station and sell its licenses and equipment.

Peconic Public Broadcasting was founded by former WLIU staffers and community supporters who did not want to lose 88.3's format and local focus. PPB successfully raised the funds to purchase the license from Long Island University.
