Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and the Southampton Town Police Department are offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a fugitive suspected of killing a Catholic nun in a hit-and-run accident. Police say that Carlos Armando Ixpec-Chitay was behind the wheel on July 9 when an SUV fatally struck Sister Jacqueline Walsh, who was on a walk on Rose Hill Road in Water Mill. Sister Jackie, who was staying at a nearby retreat house with fellow members of the Sisters of Mercy, was discovered by a passerby at 8:30 p.m. that night, and an SUV with front-end damage with later found abandoned nearby.


Also among recent East End crime reports, the East End DWI Task Force sweeps the North Fork and Riverhead.

Driving on County Road 39 in Southampton, it is hard to missing the dinosaur statues in front of Yesterday's Treasures. Now one of those dinos will be drawing eyes in Water Mill, standing out in front of Incarnation Lutheran Church next to a sign that states, "We baptize not lobotomize. Bring your brain to church." The dinosaur resembles a velociraptor from "Jurassic Park," but the pastor of Incarnation Lutheran, the Rev. Katrina Foster, has taken to calling it "Luthersaurus."


Members of a local church gathered Wednesday morning on the steps of Southampton Town Hall to protest on the one-year anniversary of the first day same-sex couples could legally obtain a marriage license in New York State. According to the leader of the demonstration, the Rev. Donald Havrilla of Southampton Full Gospel Church, they were also there to protest how they were treated a year ago on July 26, the first day that same-sex weddings were performed at Town Hall.

County Road 39 Crash


Southampton Town police have impounded both vehicles that were involved in a collision Tuesday on County Road 39 — which resulted in a stretch of the four-lane highway being closed for six hours — as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues. Police said the crash, involving a 2012 Mercedes Benz and a 2004 Western Star truck, was reported at 1:56 p.m. on County Road 39 near the Inlet Road intersection. The collision caused substantial damage to both vehicles and debris and vehicle fluids were spread on all lanes of the highway, according to police.

Politics


A poll conducted by a "respected Democratic firm" has incumbent Rep. Tim Bishop well ahead of Republican challenger Randy Altschuler more than three months before the two head into the ring for a rematch of their 2010 race, according to Roll Call.


The Independence Party of New York State is looking for a new Southampton Town chairman and turning to state Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. to take on the role. The Sag Harbor resident said that he expects to accept the chairmanship, but will not be meeting with Frank MacKay, the state and Suffolk County chairman of the Independence Party, until Thursday. "He's an institution in Southampton," MacKay said of Thiele. "We'd love to have him."

Art Fairs


Contemporary art fair will run from Friday through Monday on the Elks Lodge grounds, with a VIP preview Thursday.

Art Southampton — presented by Art Miami — made its Hamptons debut on Thursday evening, with an Opening Night VIP Preview benefiting Southampton Hospital. The fair features 50 international art galleries. Among works to be shown include Milton Avery, Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Larry Rivers, Andy Warhol and many more. The fair runs from July 26 through 30, and is located at the Southampton Elks Lodge fairgrounds.


Art dealers, collectors, investors, and lovers packed the artMRKT Hamptons international contemporary art fair again on June 21.

Benefits


The annual Ann Liguori Foundation Dinner Dance was Saturday at in Water Mill, hosted by talk show host/reporter/author Ann Liguori to benefit the American Cancer Society and Healthy Children, Healthy Futures, a nonprofit that teaches young people about good nutrition and fitness for overall health benefits.


The Children Museum of the East End's fourth annual Family Fair was Saturday, themed "CMEE in the Great Outdoors," with an array of nature-themed arts and crafts, water slides, entertainment, games, music and food. George Stephanopoulos, the host of "This Week" on ABC, and his family were among the attendees.


"Rock the Dock," Bay Street Theatre's biggest benefit of the year, was Saturday on the Long Wharf in Sag Harbor. Chris Bauer of "True Blood" and "The Wire" and Aida Turturro of "The Sopranos" were among the guests. Tony Award-winner Lillias White, who stars as Maybelle Smith in Bay Street's upcoming world premiere of "Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues," performed, and DJ Andrea Shapiro spun. Rock the Dock supports the Mainstage productions at Bay Street in the summer months and educational initiatives year round, including Literature Live, college internships, theater camps and kids' classes.


Chuck Scarborough — the NBC 4 news anchor — and wife Ellen were the honorees Saturday at the Southampton Aninal Shelter Foundation's Unconditional Love Gala, for their efforts on behalf of animals in need of a home. The benefit was held in Southampton Village at the waterfront estate of Avon’s Sandra McConnell, and emceed by Jane Hanson, the co-host of NBC 4's "New York Live."
