Train Service to Montauk Restored

The Long Island Rail Road is back up and running east of Speonk after Irene.

LIRR service to Montauk resumed Wednesday night with the 6:17 train from Jamaica, after Hurricane Irene’s approach and damage it left behind continued to cancel trains between Speonk and Montauk.

The first westbound train leaves Montauk at 10:38 p.m. making all local stops to Bay Shore, then running express to Jamaica, arriving at 1:35 a.m.

The only LIRR service still suspended is east of Ronkonkoma to Greenport.

"We are delighted to be able to restore service to Montauk in time for customers who are heading out East for the Labor Day weekend," LIRR President Helena E. Williams was quoted as saying in a post on the MTA website Wednesday. "We know how important our service is to the local economy.”

Customers who board at stations where the electricity is still out and ticket machines are not working will not be charged the higher on-board fare for tickets purchased on the train.
