Stuff Your Mailbox Saturday with Food for the Needy

Mail carriers to collect for Island Harvest.

On Saturday, Southampton mail carriers will be collecting more than just letters.

As part Island Harvest’s Stamp Out Hunger Campaign, which aims to provide food to the needy, the U.S. Postal Service will be gathering non-perishable food items left in the mailboxes of their patrons.

According to Island Harvest, all of the goods collected will be sent to soup kitchens and food banks across the island to help feed the 285,000 on Long Island who risk going hungry every day.

In addition to food items, diapers and toiletries are being accepted as well. Items can be placed in mailboxes or bagged and left next to the boxes.

“We have been doing this for fifteen years,” said Maura Hanm, postmaster for the Westhampton Post Office. “I think it’s wonderful and people can help invest in their community and help stockpile food for those in desperate need.”

“Anything residents can do to help the effort is very much appreciated,” Hanm said.
