Shinnecock Leaders Call for Evacuation of Reservation

Leadership says those who choose to stay do so at their own risk.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation tribal trustees are urging residents of the in Southampton to evacuate.

Residents are being directed to head to the Red Cross hurricane shelter at , or, if they have special medicals needs, to head to the .

The tribal leadership asks residents to transport themselves, but those who can't may call 631-283-3864 or 631-745-5179 for assistance.

Those with vehicles who can provide transportation to others are asked to call 631-283-3864.

"The Shinnecock Emergency Management Team will travel door to door to make sure all are informed of this evacuation," according to a trustee statement. "If you choose to stay, you do so at your own risk."

Those deciding to stay behind are asked to call the tribe's command center at 631-283-3864 to inform emergency personnel.
