Rain Expected To Bring Erosion, Wind Damage and Flooding

High surf and high wind advisories are in effect.

Friday's rain has caused some roads to become impassable due to flooding, and the National Weather Service predicts downed trees and power lines are still in store.

The end of Crescent Lane at Mecox Bay and Davids Lane in Water Mill were flooded.

A high wind warning is in effect through 11 p.m. Friday, with the strongest winds expected in the afternoon and early evening. Southwest winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour with gusts up to 60 miles per hour are predicted. Localized gusts could exceed 60 miles per hour.

"The high winds will bring down trees and power lines," the weather service stated. "Light weight objects outdoors, such as trash cans and deck furniture should be brought indoors or secured. Use extreme crossing while driving, especially high profile vehicles crossing bridges and overpasses."

The Long Island Power Authority issues an alert Friday at 10 a.m. that high winds can lead to unsafe working conditions for line repair crews, which could delay their response time. "Additional LIPA crews are available and will continue to respond to outages as quickly and safely as possible," the alert stated. "If you encounter any downed wire, you should assume it is a live electric wire and report it immediately to LIPA at 1-800-490-0075."

The weather service also issued a high surf advisory for the South Fork, which remains in effect through 1 a.m. Saturday. Large waves capable of causing erosion and washovers are expected into the evening on ocean beaches. Breaking waves could reach 7 to 10 feet tall, the weather service forecasts, peaking Friday afternoon and early evening.
