Update: Leaking Oil Tanker on Montauk Highway Diverts Traffic

Westbound traffic diverted onto Old Mill Road; eastbound traffic diverted to Flying Point Road.

Southampton Fire Department is diverting traffic on Montauk Highway in Water Mill due to a leaking oil tanker.

Westbound traffic is being sent down Old Mill Road, while eastbound traffic is being diverted to Flying Point Road. Southampton Village Police said at 11:20 a.m. that roads should be reopened soon.

The tanker leaked just west of the Princess Diner, according to a fire official.

Deanna Annis, of The Furniture Garden in Water Mill, said a sympathetic police officer let her through the barrier at Head of Pond and Montauk Highway to get to her business.

Occasionally, eastbound traffic was allowed through on Montauk Highway, but Annis said as of 10:30 a.m. traffic in both directions was being sent down detours.

"Just hoping my wonderful hand carved Ganesha sitting at the end of my drive (the powerful Hindu Deity that is the remover of obstacles) will be doing his job and opening traffic back up soon," Annis quipped in an note to Patch.
