NatGeo Names Coopers #2 Family Beach in U.S.

A new accolade for Southampton Village beach.

National Geographic Traveler has confirmed what Southampton locals have known for years: is a great place to spend the day with your family.

The magazine named the Southampton Village beach the number two family beach in the U.S. On top of that honor, National Geographic says the Hamptons collectively, from Southampton to Montauk Point, make for the fourth best beach in the world.

“Hopefully it will generate visitors to the East End and help with the economy here,” Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley said of Coopers' new titles.

"Rub elbows with the rich and famous along this wide, white-sand beach, a true Hamptons treasure," National Geographic writes. "A stroll along Coopers Beach offers the unique view of a seemingly endless Atlantic on one side and historic mansions on the other."

The magazine goes on to describe Coopers as a gently sloping beach, ideal for families, and highlights the amenities: lifeguards, snack bar, chair and umbrella rentals, and a summer concert series.

Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Mass., topped National Geographic's list.

Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. "Dr. Beach," named Coopers the No. 1 beach in America in 2010, after the beach had several showings over the years in spots 2 through 10 on his annual list released Memorial Day weekend. Having finally attained the top spot, Coopers was .

This Memorial Weekend, on Saturday at 4 p.m. is the at Coopers Beach. The family kite fly, for $30, benefits lung cancer research.

Coopers is also the site of ' annual , each December.
