Hike With Southampton Trails Preservation Society in December

Weekend hikes lined up all month long at parks and preserves.

The Southampton Trails Preservation Society presents its December schedule. Call hike leaders for more information on each event, and to RSVP.

Sat., Dec. 1 -  Long Pond Greenbelt Traverse. 10 a.m.-noon.
Meet at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor. Moderately-paced 5 mile hike with spectacular views of Long Pond, Little Long Pond, and Crooked Pond. Rain or snow cancels.

Sun., Dec. 2 – Amsterdam Beach Loop, East Hampton’s newest trail. 10-11:30 a.m.
This 200-acre preserve, owned by the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County and the State of New York offers a diverse fast-paced hike through woodland, wetland and moorland with spectacular views of bluffs, beach, and the Andy Warhol Estate.

Sat., Dec. 8 - The Mulvihill Preserves. 10 a.m.-noon.
Meet on Highview Ave. where it intersects with Brick Kiln Road, Sag Harbor. Moderately-paced 3+ mile hike through this historically interesting area. Ponds, glacial erratics, and the Great Swamp. Wow!

Sun., Dec. 9 – Red Creek to Camp Tekawitha. 10 a.m.-noon.
Meet at the parking lot of Red Creek Park on Old Riverhead Road, Hampton Bays. Moderately-paced hike. See the old girl scout camp, Camp Tekawitha. Leader: Jim Crawford, 631-369-2341.

Sat., Dec. 15 - Whiskey Hill Perambulation. 10-11 a.m.
Meet on Mill Path off Lopers Path (heading east), Bridgehampton. Moderately-paced 1 ½ mile hike with ocean views from top of moraine with kettlehole ponds and an enormous glacial erratic along the way.

Sun., Dec. 16 – HOT Ride. 10 a.m.-noon.
BYO horse and helmet. Must be a member of STPS/HOT to participate due to insurance requirements. Easy to join on the day of the ride! Call for reservations and meeting place.

Sun., Dec. 16 – Barrel Hill to Elliston Park. 10 a.m.-noon.
Meet on Edge of Woods Road where the power lines cross, between David White’s Lane on the east and Long Springs Road on the west in Southampton.  Moderately-paced hike to White Hill with geodetic survey marker and views of the original Mackay Radio tower of ITT then on to beautiful Elliston Park with views of Big Fresh Pond and Wolf Swamp.

Sat., Dec. 22 – Trout Pond to the Paumanok Path. 10 a.m.-noon.
Meet at Trout Pond parking lot on Noyac Road across from Mill Road for a moderately-paced hike around historic Trout Pond and then on to the unknown. Leader: Joe Lane, 631-725-3942.

Sat., Dec. 29 – Elliston Park Ramble. 10 a.m. - noon
Meet at the Park entrance on Millstone Brook Road in Southampton for a moderately-paced hike with views of Wolf Swamp and Big Fresh Pond.

Sun., Dec. 30 - Grassland to Grassland Meander. 9 - 10:30 a.m.
Meet at the South Fork Natural History Museum parking lot. Join Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt on a fast-paced 1½-mile hike from Vineyard Field to the grasslands of Poxabogue County Park, two areas where continuing efforts are being made to remove non-native, invasive plants and reestablish healthy populations of natives. Be sure to check out the new nature observation blind when you arrive at Poxabogue.
