Drivers Urged to Stay off the Roads

Southampton Town Office of Emergency Management reports falling trees and road closures across town.

Lt. Robert Iberger, the head of the Southampton Town Office of Emergency Management, is asking drivers to stay home, to avoid clogging roads or putting themselves at risk.

"Conditions are starting to worsen steadily with winds increasing and rain bands starting to impact the area," Iberger said. "These are starting to cause issues on our roads."

"Unless you are a utility worker on assignment, DPW or highway worker or emergency responder responding to a call for service you should not be on the roads at this time," he added.

Between downed trees, downed power wires and flooded streets, many roadways have become impassable or obstructed.

According to chatter on emergency frequencies, Springville Road in front of Hampton Boatworks in Hampton Bays is flooded. There have also been reports of downed wires burning in the roadway on Hedges Lane in Sagaponack, and large branches or fallen trees blocking the roadway on Noyac Road in Noyac, Halsey Lane in Water Mill, Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton, West Tiana Road in Hampton Bays, Vail Avenue in East Quogue and many other places.

"This storm brings a risk of flooding from torrential rains as well as surge/tide and we have already had two tornado warnings in effect for this area," Iberger said.

County Road 80, a.k.a Montauk Highway or South County Road, in Westhampton is flooded between Jagger Lane and Brushy Neck Lane. Police have taped off the road, according to chatter on emergency frequencies.

A tree is blocking both lanes of traffic on Hayground Road in Bridgehampton. Cobb Road near the Cobb Road West intersection is also impassable.

Dune Road is also impassable East and West of Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays. Southampton Police, who say they are having a problem with sightseers, are asking everyone to stay clear of the roadway.
