Census Says There Are Fewer People in Southampton Village Than Housing Units
Individuals who say they live in the village year round are outnumbered by the number of residences, according to new data.
Southampton Village has 205 fewer residents than it has housing units, according to new U.S. Census data — and 62 percent of units are classified as vacant.
Since the 2000 Census, the number of housing units — houses, apartments, mobile homes, trailers, or separate living quarters within a house — grew by 13 percent in the village while the full-time population shrank 22 percent. In a 10-year span the village has gone from having many second homes and summers homes to having mostly part-time homes.
Weekenders and summer residents are not counted among Southampton's population. Census surveys instructed respondents to only count themselves as residents if they lived in a home most of the time.
