Census Data Shows Huge Population Increases and Dips

Numbers unveiled Thursday.

While the overall population of eastern Southampton Town, excluding Sagaponack, increased by 2.3 percent from 2000 to 2010, most hamlets and villages saw population changes bigger than 20 percent, according to 2010 U.S. Census figures released Thursday.

The hamlet of Tuckahoe and the village of Southampton saw population decreases of more than 20 percent. Bridgehampton and Shinnecock Hills grew in population by more than 25 percent, and Noyac and the Shinnecock Indian Reservation grew by more than 30 percent.

Water Mill's population shrunk by nearly 10 percent and North Sea saw almost no change, dipping less than 1 percent.

The double-digit percentage point dips in some areas — even as new homes have been constructed over the past 10 years — indicate an increasing number of second-home owners in Southampton. The Census instructed respondents to only count themselves as residents in surveys if they lived in a home most of the time. Weekenders and summer visitors are not counted in Southampton's population.

Sagaponack was listed as a Census Designated Place in 2000, but part of Sagaponack incorporated as a village in 2005. With the CDP and village having different boundaries, comparing the 2000 and 2010 numbers would not draw an accurate comparison of the population.
