Roman Roth Named Partner at Wölffer Estate Vineyard

Winemaker's "Grapes of Roth" will be brought under Wölffer banner.

Roman Roth, the winemaker and technical director of Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, now has another title: partner.

Joey and Marc Wölffer, who assumed ownership of their late father's vineyard on Jan. 1, recently named Roth the sole partner.

Roth's independent Merlot and Riesling wines produced with his wife, Dr. Dushy Roth, under the label The Grapes of Roth, in Sag Harbor, will become part of the Wölffer brand.

Christian Wölffer founded the vineyard in 1988 and the German-born Roth became the winemaker in 1992.

“It was very exciting to come to America and together with Christian Wölffer, have the opportunity to build a unique vineyard and winery at a very special location," Roth is quoted as saying in a statement from the vineyard. "For me, it was the American Dream."

In addition to serving as Wölffer's winemaker, he is the winemaker for Roanoke Vineyards in Riverhead. Roth is vice president of the Long Island Wine Council, executive vice president of Long Island Merlot Alliance, and the honorary event chair of the 2013 Harvest East End.

“It is great timing to name Roman a partner just after his 20th anniversary and during the 25th anniversary of the estate," Marc Wölffer said. "Roman’s dedication and incredible passion has helped build the reputation of our wines and the vineyard.”

Joey Wölffer added, “We are excited about working together with Roman for hopefully the next 20 years. Having this type of continuity in a family-owned business is most important.”
