In accordance with Southampton Village’s recent ban on plastic bags in grocery and drug stores, recently announced its donation of 1,000 re-usable shopping bags to in Southampton. Bags will be distributed to the popular Southampton market during the week of July 23.
In keeping with our commitment to keeping the East End healthy through environmentally responsible programs, we are in full support of this extremely green initiative. If you're offered a re-usable bag, take it and use it. Use it. And use it again. Help us help our and your environment.
When Mayor Epley, Trustees Yastrzemski and McGann passed our BYO Bag Law in 2011, A&P (owners of our local WALDBAUM's grocery store) capitalized on the moment and promoted it as one more good thing that we could "all" do for the environment. Waldbaum's was proud to be a part of helping us lighten the load of excessive plastic packaging, just like the folks at WHOLE FOODS; a store admired for the successful changes they've brought to the grocery industry in the last half-dozen years. Today, communities near and far have reached out to our village asking how their town can do the same thing. Let's face it, who wouldn't want a better environment to be the legacy that they leave behind? I don't think that Mark, Rich or Nancy, who have 7 kids in all, realized at the time that the little ripple they made by being the first in NY State to ban single-use plastic bags, would travel all the way around the world, such as it has. Thanks again for your company's contributions! Roger Blaugh, Co-chair, "SAVE" The Mayor's Environmental Advisory Committee Village of Southampton, NY
