Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Sagaponack Brush Fire

A tractor may have ignited the fire on Thursday, chief says.

Update, 4 p.m.: A brush fire that broke out in a Sagaponack field on Thursday afternoon was quickly knocked down, according to Bridgehampon Fire Department Chief Gary Horsburgh.

The chief said a tractor may have sparked the fire. "In this dry heat, it takes very little," he said. Cut straw caught fire about 100 feet into the field in a section of about 100-by-100 feet, he said.

"It was so hot, it went up quick," he said, adding that the firefighters will quickly able to pour water on the flames and extinguish it.

About 18 members responded to the call, including the ambulance crew members, whom Horsburgh said were instrumental on a call like this because of soaring temperatures.

The emergency medical technicians set up a tent and put some water on ice to ensure firefighters had a place to cool off. "We were lucky we had rehab there," he said.
