'In the Next Room' Brings Adult Laughs to Bridgehampton
Comedy is based on electricity's unconventional role in treating women with "hysteria."
Sarah Ruhl's comedy about love and sexuality during the emergence of readily available electricity, "In The Next Room or the vibrator play," continues in Bridgehampton, put on by Hamptons Independence Theatre Festival and the Naked Stage.
"'Next Room' gives such good vibrations that it’s been one of the top seven plays done in America for the last two years," according to HITfest, which noted that the play was nominated for three Tonys.
In 2009, The New York Times called the play a "fanciful but compassionate" look at the treatment — and mistreatment — of women during the late 19th century.
The cast of the Long Island premiere includes Licia James Zegar, Glenn Thomas Cruz, Bonnie Grice, Caroline Smith, Joseph Brondo, Natasha Murray and Christian Scheider. Scheider, who is acting alongside Clive Owen and Juliet Binoche in the upcoming film "Words And Pictures," is making his professional stage debut in "In the Next Room."
"In the Next Room or the vibrator play" continues through May 26 at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays at the Bridgehampton Community House. Tickets are $25 available at nextroom.eventbrite.com.
