Hamptons Fest Films Have Strong Showing in Oscar Nominations

Four of 10 Best Picture nominees were featured at festival.

The Hamptons International Film Festival audience award winner for Best Narrative Feature, “The King’s Speech,” leads the Oscar race with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed Tuesday.

Screenwriter David Seidler is up for Best Original Screenplay and director Tom Hooper is nominated for Best Director. Both men attended the East Coast premiere of their film at HIFF and took questions from an impressed audience.

Three more films featured during the October festival are also competing for Best Picture, “Black Swan,” “127 Hours” and “Toy Story 3.”

“Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky will compete with Hooper for Best Director. The leads of “The King’s Speech” and “127 Hours,” Colin Firth and James Franco, respectively, were nominated for Best Actor. Franco was interviewed at HIFF as part of the “A Conversation With” series and his short film, “The Clerk’s Tale,” was screened at the festival. Geoffrey Rush was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The King’s Speech” as King George VI’s speech therapist.

Natalie Portman was nominated for Best Actress for the lead role in “Black Swan,” and she has competition from Michelle Williams for her role in “Blue Valentine.” Both films had their East Coast premieres at HIFF.

Helena Bonham Carter, as Queen Elizabeth in “The King’s Speech,” was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

In the Best Film Editing Category, Andrew Weisblum was nominated for “Black Swan,” Tariq Anwar for “The King’s Speech” and Jon Harris for “127 Hours.” “Toy Story 3,” which was featured in an animation master class during the festival, was nominated for Best Animated Feature, and Tom Myers and Michael Silvers were nominated for Best Sound Editing for their work on the movie. In Cinematography, Danny Cohen was nominated for the “King’s Speech” and Matthew Libatique was nominated for “Black Swan.” “The King’s Speech” was additionally nominated for Art Direction, Costume Design, Sound Mixing and Cinematography.

Adrien Morot was nominated for Best Makeup for his work on “Barney’s Version,” starring Paul Giamatti, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy. Barney’s version, HIFF’s opening night film, had its U.S. premiere at the festival.

In music, Alexandre Desplat was nominated for “The King’s Speech” and A.R. Rahman was nominated for “127 Hours” in the Best Original Score category. “If I Rise” from “127 Hours,” with music by Rahman and lyric by Dido and Rollo Armstrong, got a nod for Best Original Song.
