Water Color by Kim Uchiyama

Exhibition Friday June 1 – Sunday June 24, 2012,
Opening Reception, Saturday, June 2, 2012,  6-8Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce the first exhibition of the 2012 season in her Bridgehampton  Gallery -  “Water Color” by  New York artist,  Kim Uchiyama.  This will be the artist’s first exhibition in the Hamptons and will consist of watercolor paintings completed between 2007 and 2012.

Uchiyama’s water colors consist of sensual horizontal waves of pure color that create a wonderful tension between a free, sensual movement of the brush on paper and her practiced control of the medium.  She painted many of these in the city of Otranto - on the tip of Italy’s boot,  and the intense, harsh light, and rhythmic sway of wind and water invited the fully saturated colors.  Together, the strokes in these paintings create a rhythm that gives concrete form to nature’s music.

Uchiyama has exhibited her paintings in galleries and museums around the country and her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art News, The New Criterion, artcritical, The New York Sun, and many other publications.  She has received a New York Foundation of the Arts fellowship as well as fellowships at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the MacDowell Colony.  Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections.
