HIFF: "The Artist"

"The Artist" is the East Hampton Closing Night Film. It is also shown in Southampton on Oct. 15 at 8:30 p.m. Actress Penelope Ann Miller is expected to attend Q&As after both screenings.

Screenwriter: Michel Hazanavicius
Producers: Thomas Langmann, Emmanuel Montamat
Cast: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Missi Pyle

According to the film festival, "Travel back to a golden age of cinema in this enchanting, comedic tribute to silent films. It’s 1927, and handsome, witty, and beguiling George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is Hollywood’s biggest movie star. Unhappily married, Valentin has unwittingly stolen the heart of a nobody-turned-extra named Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), who dreams of becoming a great actress in her own right. When the studio converts to the “talkies,” Valentin balks at the prospect: who would want to hear actors speaking? Valentin takes it upon himself to keep the silent era alive, risking his career and his fortune, and stiff competition from his former allies."
