Canio's Lines Up Author Talks All Weekend

An art exhibition by Peter Begley is also planned this month at the Sag Harbor bookstore.

Canio's Books, at 290 Main Street in Sag Harbor, aims to be more than a bookstore, according to co-owner Maryanne Calendrille, and to that end the "literary salon" continues its summer readers series this weekend with diverse authors.

On Friday, author William Schwelbe will give a reading from his new book, "The End Of Your Life Book Club," a memoir about the author reading with his mother during her final months before she died of cancer. The talk will begin at 5 p.m. and admission is free.

On Saturday, Geoff Geham, a local writer from Sagaponack, will come to the store to talk about his new coming of age memoir about a simpler time in the Hamptons during his childhood in the '60s and '70s, when the area remained a middle-class beach paradise. The book is titled "The Kingdom of the Kid: Growing Up in the Long Lost Hamptons." This talk will also begin at 5 p.m. and is also free of charge.

On Sunday at 4 p.m. author Simon Van Booy, recently featured on NPR's "Diane Rehm Show," will return to Canio's to discuss and read from his latest work, "The Illusion of Separateness," about a series of characters throughout the world and the ways in which they realize their interconnectedness.

On July 20 local artist Peter Begley will present his new show, "Totems," displaying a new series of acrylic, wax and oil paintings on paper. The opening will run from 5 to 7 p.m.

Canio's opened in the fall of 1980 and has been run by Kathryn Szoka and Calendrille since 1999. The bookshop seeks to be part small business, part cafe and part literary salon. According to Calendrille, "Serendipity, art, literature, culture and community are the sort of things we want to cultivate."

Canio's is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday.
