Workers Dig Around Southampton Main Street for New Traffic Light

Contractors are digging up sidewalks, burying conduit, and conducting other work this week at the intersection of Main Street, Nugent Street and Hampton Road in Southampton Village.

The work is part of a grant-funded project to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Countdown crosswalk signals were previously installed, and now traffic signal loops are being buried in the street and footings for a new metal utility pole are being installed under the sidewalk area.

One poll was installed weeks back at the corner of Main Street and Nugent Street. Diagonally across, at the southeast corner of Main Street and Hampton Road, the second pole will be installed this week.

Vito Lena, an engineer with Dunn Engineering in Westhampton Beach, said that once the cement footing under the second pole sets in two to three weeks and a lab confirms it is safe, a span wire will be hung between the poles with new traffic signals.

Lena said the new traffic signals loops in the asphalt will influence when the traffic lights change from red to green, as vehicles drive over the loops.

An existing wooden utility pole will be removed.

NKC Construction is the prime contractor, and there are several subcontractors as well, Lena said.

Work will continue through Thursday, when the sidewalk sections that were removed to accommodate the underground work will be replaced with new cement, Lena said.

Bricks are also being laid at the southwest corner of Main Street and Jagger Lane.
