Week in Review: School Merger Defeated; Bomb Squad Responds To North Haven

A look back at the headlines from the week of Oct. 28.

1. Southampton-Tuckahoe School Merger Defeated

The proposal to merge the Southampton and Tuckahoe school districts failed to muster a majority in Southampton, therefore squashing the merger, at least for now. 

2. Bomb Squad Investigating Report of Dynamite on North Haven Beach

The Suffolk County Bomb Squad detonated an explosive found on a North Haven beach on Monday afternoon. 

According to officials on scene, the suspicious item looked like a stick of dynamite and was marked as an explosive. It was found against the dune on the west side of the South Ferry slips at about 12:15 p.m. 

3. Gaming Authority Trailer Goes Up in Flames on Shinnecock Reservation

A large office trailer on the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, used by the gaming authority, was completely destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. The next day, investigators said it is being investigated as an arson. 

4. Town Issues Summonses After Southampton House Fire

While the Southampton Town fire marshal's office continues to investigate the cause of a blaze that broke out in a house on North Sea Road in Southampton on Monday several violations have already been issued.

Southampton Town Fire Marshal John Rankin said Tuesday that summonses, including violations for not having working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, were filed against the owner of the house at 364 North Sea Road and one of the occupants, whose names were not immediately available. 

5. Accident in Southampton Village Sends Driver To Hospital

A two-car accident in Southampton Village on Tuesday afternoon sent one to the hospital, according to fire department officials. The crash happened at the corner of Hampton Road and Pine Street before 4 p.m.
