Toxic Algae Appears in Southampton Waterways

Officials said this is not the first time the blue-green bacteria has appeared in local waterways.

Officials have confirmed that a toxic algae has bloomed in both Mill Pond and Lake Agawam in Southampton, according to a report on Newsday

The bacteria, Newsday reports is the same that killed a Jack Russell terrier in September 2012 in East Hampton — The dog died of liver failure after it drank water from Georgica Pond that officials believe was tainted with the blue-green algae that produces a toxin harmful to the liver.

Officials sourced in the Newsday article stated that this is not the first time the algae has made an appearance in Southampton and that the DEC has been monitoring the waterways since 2009.
