Southampton Pet of the Week: Carmen

Southampton has some loving pets available for adoption.

This week, the Southampton Animal Shelter is looking to find a home Carmen, a 2 -year-old blue Pitbull

According to Donald Bambrick, the animal shelter supervisor, Carmen arrived at the shelter in September. He was a stray.

"Carmen is looking for an active home where she can burn off some energy and would be good in a home with other dogs," he said.

All animals are licensed, up to date on their vaccinations, micro-chipped and have been spayed or neutered, according to Bambrick.

Adoption fees typically range from $40 to $60 for a cat and from $60 to $125 for a dog.

To adopt Carmen or any of the other animals available for adoption, call the shelter at 631-728-7387 or visit them at 102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.

I adopted a pit bull from the local shelter 12 years ago. He was about 1 year old at the time and was found wandering the streets. Contrary to the reputation of this breed, our dog is a loyal and gentle friend. He was raised with two small children and never exhibited any aggressiness towards anyone. He is still alive and well today at 13 years plus, and lives in a fenced in 3/4 acre property. Don't strike off this breed from your list of possible adoption, just because of stories. Sometimes the owners are responsible for the animal's behavior.

I agree I also lived for many years with this breed and he was a loyal loving friend. It's alot like kids raise them with a loving firm hand and they can be among the best of pets.
