Schedule: 50th Annual HarborFest

Whaling and maritime history to be celebrated during weekend-long festival in Sag Harbor.

Sag Harbor will come alive the weekend for HarborFest, an annual celebration of the historic whaling village's culture that started in 1963 as the Old Whalers’ Festival.

Events for the 50th anniversary celebration, which will run Sept. 6 through Sept.8, include whaleboat races, lobster roll eating and kids corn shucking contests, films, indoor and outdoor concerts, walking tours, art exhibitions, sidewalk shopping and plenty more for both children and adults to enjoy.


Schedule of Events:

FRIDAY 

Harborfest Fiesta
At 6 p.m. Bring your chairs and dancing shoes to the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum for Montaco Truck tacos, chips & salsa, guacamole, Montauk Brewing Company beer, Channing Daughters wine, Dreamy Ice Cream and Iced Coffee from Sylvester & Co., Music will be provided by by DJ Mister Lama. At the door: $75 adults, $20 kids 16 and under.

Solar Boat “Novella” Docks
At 6:00 p.m. the solar powered boat “Novella” will be docked at the Sag Harbor Harborfest  to view. The boat will be on view all weekend. 

Film: For Me and My Gal
At 6:00 p.m. The Bay Street Theatre will present the film, Me and my Gal, starring Gene Kelly. Tickets are $7 at the door.

SATURDAY

Farmers Market
From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., a farmers market will open on Bay Street. Among the items for sale will be fresh organic vegetables, locally made cheeses, oysters, clams, mushrooms and fresh bread and pastries.

Arts & Crafts Fair
An arts and Crafts fair will open at 9 a.m. at Marine Park and will feature fine art paintings, water colors and photographs, pottery, needlework and jewelry.

Sidewalk Sale
The village’s shops and restaurants will display bring their wares, starting at 10:00 a.m. on Main Street until 4:00 p.m. 

Taste of Sag Harbor
Try some of Sag Habor's flavors throughout the day at the Long Wharf. Featured eateries, include, The Golden Pear, Bay Burger, Muse in the Harbor, North Fork Food Works, Sweet ‘Tauk Lemonade, Multi Aquaculture Systems, G&L Gyro, Dough Gluten-Free Baking, Gula Gula, Silver Spoon and Hormans Pickles, among others.

Coast Guard Boat
At 10:00 a.m. the U.S. Coast Guard station in Montauk will have a deep sea rescue boat at the Long Wharf to view.

Face Painting and Karaoke
This year HarborFest brings a face painter down to Long Wharf to help bring out the inner animal. It’s a benefit for the Pierson Thespians, the local high school theatrical group. Booth opens at 10:00 a.m.

Classic Boat Display
For enthusiasts of fine vessels, several classic boats —Skiffs to sailboats — will be on display, starting at 10:00 a.m. along Long Wharf courtesy of the East End Classic Boat Society.

Children’s Amusements
Games and activities for the kids are available at the Long Wharf, including a rock climbing wall and bouncy house, starting at 10:00 a.m.

Coast Guard Inspections/Knot Tying
The The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering free boat inspections over the weekend at the floating dock adjacent to Long Wharf. You can have a trained Auxiliarist discuss the required and recommended boating equipment for your vessel — lights, placards, numbering, visual distress signals, fire extinguishers, etc. 

Walking Tour
Meet at Windmill at 10:3 a.m. for a tour that explores Sag Harbor’s waterfront and the storied people and businesses that helped the community emerge as a dominant whaling port of the 19th century.

Corn Shucking Contest
Kids are invited down to Long Wharf at 11:00 a.m. to see who can peel an ear of corn the fastest. Register at the Windmill. 

Concert
Hear John Corr, who welcomes a sing-along at the Long Wharf, starting at 11:00 a.m.

Old Burying Ground Tour
Tour the Old Burying Ground, the village’s oldest cemetery at 11:30 a.m.

Annual Whalers Cup Whaleboat Races
At noon, watch the first elimination round at Windmill Beach. The second elimination round will start at 3 p.m.

Indigenous American Music
Musician Walter Purizaca will perform music from a variety Native Americaninspired sources, starting at noon at the Long Wharf.

Concert
The Sag Harbor Community Band will perform at the Long Wharf at 1:00 p.m. 

Keith Leaf Entertainment
Main Street and the Long Wharf will feature stilts, juggling and so much more ‘til from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Firefighters Cup Whaleboat Races
From Windmill Beach, watch the fifth annual HarborFest Firefighter Cup races, starting at 2:00 p.m.  

Historic Walking Tour of Eastville 
The Eastville Community Historical Society will welcome guests at 5:00 p.m. for a walking tour through the Eastville area including St. David’s church, at one time a stop on the fabled Underground Railroad, and its 19th century graveyard

Barbecue
Breakwater Yacht Club will celebrates its 25th Anniversary at its clubhouse overlooking the harbor with a BBQ. The party is open to the public. Tickets are $60 per person in advance through breakwateryc.org, or $70 at the door.

SUNDAY

Pancake Breakfast
Head over to the Main Firehouse at 8:00 a.m. for a morning of flapjacks. 

Arts & Crafts Fair

Pilates on the Beach
At 9:00 a.m. head over to Windmill Beach for a stretch and tone class to get you in shape for the busy day ahead.

This tour will visit houses of women who have been born or lived in Sag Harbor. Some famous, some not so, but all interesting. The tour starts at 10:30 a.m.

Tug-O-War 
Before whaleboat racing action starts up again at Windmill Beach, kids are invited to participate in a good old fashioned contest, which starts at 11:30 a.m.

Whaleboat Races Semifinals
Head over to Windmill Beach to  cheer on your favorite team at noon. The championship round starts at 3:00 p.m.

Concert
Jim Turner will perform at the Long Wharf, starting at noon.

Clam Chowder Contest
Find out who makes the best clam chowder in Sag Harbor, starting at noon. The event is a benefit for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry and the Sag Harbor Booster Club.

Indigenous American Music
Musician Walter Purizaca will offer a selection of music from a variety Native American inspired sources at the Long Wharf, starting at noon. 

Waldo the Clown
Waldo the Clown will be entertaining kids at the Long Wharf from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Oakland Cemetery Tour
Head over to the Oakland Cemetery at 1:30 to learn about the Oakland Cemetery, which was created after Sag Harbor’s Old Burying Ground was filled to capacity.

JY-15 Women At the Helm Regatta
The Breakwater Yacht Club will host the women's regetta, starting at 2:30 p.m. The entry fee will be $10 per boat, and Breakwater YC will provide boats for an additional $25.

Clam Shucking Contest
At 3:30 p.m. head over to the Long Wharf to find out who will be named Shucker of the Year. This event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. 

Lobster Roll Eating Contest
At 4:00 p.m. a lobster roll eating contest will be held at the Long Wharf. The event is hosted by Bay Burger. Last year’s winner, Emory Fiveash, consumed four-and-one half lobster rolls in five minutes.
