Sacred Hearts Church Named 'Basilica'

Southampton church honored by pope, 27east reports.

, a Roman Catholic Church on Hill Street in Southampton Village, has been given an upgrade in stature by Pope Benedict XVI, according to .

The church has been named a "minor basilica," a canonical title that bestows certain privileges to the house of worship and parish. Monsignor Jeffrey Madley, the pastor of Sacred Hearts, delivered the news to parishioners at Sunday masses on Dec. 18, 27east reports.
