Military Vehicles Turn Heads on County Road 39

Armored vehicles head east Thursday morning

A caravan of four armored vehicles, with soldiers sticking out of the top hatches, were spotted in Shinnecock Hills headed east Thursday.

Kym O'Brien Smith, of East Quogue, said she saw the tan vehicles on County Road 39 by the Stony Brook Southampton campus around 10 a.m.

On June 19, the 423rd Military Police, based out of Shoreham, trained at Main Beach in East Hampton Village with their M1117 Armored Security Vehicles.

M1117s are rugged armored security vehicles known as the Guardian. It can cross water depths of 5 feet, climb gradients of 60 percent and can get over vertical obstacles of 2 feet high, according to army-technology.com.

In March 2012, the same vehicles caused a stir when they drove around the South Fork one day and the North Fork in next. A military spokesman said the vehicles were out on the road for driver training.
