Little Leaguer Wins 'Teach Children to Save' Essay Contest

Jayden Pepitone plans to use his savings to sponsor the less fortunate to play on travel baseball teams.

Southampton Little League pitcher Jayden Pepitone has penned an essay that made him the winner of the "Teach Children to Save" essay contest at the Astoria Federal Savings Southampton branch.

Entries were accepted in April, during Financial Literacy Month. The sixth annual contest called on children ages 5 to 12 to complete the sentence “If I save a lot today, in the future I could…”

Branches throughout Suffolk, Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn and Westchester received nearly 1,000 entries.

"Jayden’s winning essay describes how, with his savings, he plans to help sponsor less fortunate children to play on travel baseball teams, and enjoy the sport he loves," the bank states.

He was awarded a certificate, Education First medal and a $25 gift card.
