At Sunday at 1 p.m., friends and family of the late Jim Aery will gather near the Southampton Village helipad on Meadow Lane to dedicate a beach access road in Aery's memory.
At the urging of residents, the Village Board voted unanimously Sept. 13 to name the path Jim Aery Way. The unpaved road between Road F and Road G was previously unnamed.
Aery, who passed away from a heart attack July 14, was 58. He is remembered as being an advocate for keeping the beach clean, safe and accessible for all.
"He loved fishing and clamming, playing horseshoes, barbecuing, swimming and being surrounded by his children, grandchildren, family and friends," his daughter Lynn Maddock said. "He also had great respect for the beach and encouraged everyone down there to abide by the rules to protect the picnic area so that we could continue to enjoy it."
