County Road 39A Paving to Be Completed Thursday

No roadwork planned Friday.

The repaving of the newly widened County Road 39A will be completed on Thursday, making it the last day motorists have to expect detours and long delays during their commute, according to Suffolk County.

The stretch of highway, between North Sea Road in Southampton and Montauk Highway in Water Mill, has been undergoing work for months as new sidewalks and pavement were added to accommodate a second eastbound lane.

With Memorial Day weekend soon approaching, the question on the mind of commuters and business owners was whether the work will be done before the economically important weekend. Memorial Day weekend traffic is always hectic in Southampton, as second-home owners and visitors pour in, but lane closures on the Friday before Memorial Day could cause a new level of frustration.

But a Suffolk County spokeswoman said Wednesday that no work will be done on Friday. After Monday, highway workers will be back to paint lane markers on the road, but that job will only cause intermittent lane closures and no detours, she said.
