Advisory Issued at Havens Beach

Due to heavy rainfall, bathing advisory issued at 67 beaches countywide.

Due to heavy rainfall, the Suffolk County Department of Health has issued an advisory against bathing at 67 county beaches, though just one in the area – Havens Beach in Sag Harbor.

The warning comes based on the potential for bacteria to flush or remain in the the water system – "areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries, and, because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing."

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services recommends that beach-goers avoid swimming or wading in these waters until after two successive tidal flushes, or 24 hours after the rainfall ends.

The advisory will be lifted 24 hours after the rain stops, unless sampling done by the county determines that bacteria levels are abnormally high.
