#95 - Check Out an Exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum

Southampton Village museum has several exhibitions each year.

The was founded in 1897 by Samuel Parrish, often called Southampton's first citizen, and designed by architect Grosvenor Atterbury.

The museum has always been located in the heart of Southampton Village on Jobs Lane in a village-owned building, but a new facility is under construction in Water Mill. The Parrish is projected to move in 2012, ending its lease with the village.

Parrish exhibitions include local and internationally known painters, sculptors and multimedia artists. The museum also hosts an  for students from all over Long Island to see their works displayed in a professional atmosphere.

For admission to the museum, the suggested donation is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students with ID, and free for children younger than 18.

The Parrish's current exhibition is "," on display . It features works by Vicente himself and the colleagues and students he influenced.

It will be followed by "Julião Sarmento: Artists and Writers/House and Home," April 17 to June 12, underscoring "the artist’s long engagement with the themes of language, writing, and a sense of place."

From June 19 through Aug. 14, the Parrish displays "Dorothea Rockburne: In My Mind’s Eye." Montreal-born Rockburne first studied at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts with Paris-trained painters Paul-Émile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle, according to the Parrish website.

Then from Aug. 21 through Oct. 9, it's "Artists Choose Artists on the East End," in which prominent East End artists are invited to select an emerging artist to mentor and with whom to exhibit. "By exhibiting the work of jurors and selected artists together, 'Artists Choose Artists' provides a special opportunity to showcase 18 terrific artists in all career stages," The Parrish website states.

Next is the fourth in a series of exhibitions that exclusively use pieces from the Parrish's permanent exhibition, "American Portraits: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum," from  Oct. 16 to Nov 27.

The Parrish also simulcasts ballet and opera from Europe live in the museum theater.

Museum hours from mid-September through Memorial Day are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The summer hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
