Here are the top five headlines in October.

1. Police: Armed Men Storm North Sea Home, Leave With Cash

Police said it was just before midnight on Oct. 15 when two men barged into a home on Widener Lane carrying a revolver and a shotgun. The homeowner was in the house at the time of the robbery, according to the police report. Police said the two men grabbed $1,500 in cash from an envelope inside the home as well as the keys to a Ford vehicle, and then fled. The report did not indicate that the vehicle was taken.

Southampton-Tuckahoe School Merger Defeated

The proposal to merge the Southampton and Tuckahoe school districts failed to muster a majority in Southampton, therefore squashing the merger, at least for now. 

3. 5-Alarm Fire in North Sea Knocked Down Saturday Night

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of a blaze in a residential and commercial building in North Sea that brought out five fire departments on the night of Oct. 5. The fire gutted at least one apartment on the second floor of the G & C Knoebel Electric Corp. building at 16 Mary's Lane, just one property down from North Sea Road.

4. State Police: Drunken Driver Speeding Over 90 mph

William Bess III , 29, of Southampton, was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge after he was stopped for reportedly going 91 mph in a 55 mph zone on Montauk Highway in Southampton on Oct. 12.

5. Bomb Squad Investigating Report of Dynamite on North Haven Beach

The Suffolk County Bomb Squad detonated an explosive found on a North Haven beach on the afternoon of Oct. 28. According to officials on scene, the suspicious item looked like a stick of dynamite and was marked as an explosive. It was found against the dune on the west side of the South Ferry slips at about 12:15 p.m.
