Suffolk Notebook: IDA Hopes Incentives Will Keep Broadridge

Pols hope the cost savings will keep the company from taking its 1,600 jobs off Island.

Hoping to prevent the loss of 1,600 jobs on Long Island, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday floated an incentive package worth millions to Broadridge Financial - a public company that has threatened to move off-Island if officials didn’t find a way to help it trim costs. If the financial services company takes the offer - which its board will decide on in June - then it'll come as a disappointment to officials in New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Ohio and Texas who were trying to woo the $2.2 billion company into moving to their states. The Suffolk IDA said the incentive deal includes sales tax exemptions on $75 million in equipment purchases related to its renovation of its two Edgewood buildings, as well as a 15-…

Wrap-Up: School Budget and Election Results

Of the five area school districts, one had a failing budget Tuesday.

School Board elections and budget votes were Tuesday, and after the smoke cleared, incumbents were safe in Sagaponack, Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor, two new members were elected in Southampton, and a former board member ousted a sitting member in Tuckahoe. Tuckahoe was also one of a handful of budgets on Long Island to be rejected by voters, while all other area school districts had their budgets pass comfortably. Catch up on how budgets fared and elections ended this week in eastern Southampton Town: Tuckahoe Voters Reject $17.8M Budget; Steudte Defeats Grindle The Tuckahoe School District's proposed $17.8 million budget failed, 228-275, on Tuesday, and former School Board member Harald Steudte ousted incumbent Sharon Grindle by an 8-vote…

Southampton, Sagaponack Races Uncontested

Villages elections are June 15.

Election petitions were due May 11 in the villages of Southampton and Sagaponack, and in both municipalities there will be no contest. In Southampton Village, Trustee Richard Yastrzemski is seeking re-election and Planning Board Chairman Michael Irving has put his name in as well. The field is clear for Irving, as Trustee Bonnie Cannon has declined to seek a fourth two-year term. Yastrzemski and Cannon belong to the Citizens With Integrity Party, which holds four of five seats on the board — but will only hold three when Cannon's term is up. Irving is with the Patriot Party, which Trustee William Hattrick started last year when he sought to rejoin the board for the first time after an 18-year absense. Mayor Mark Epley said the Citizens …

Second Vote in Store for Tuckahoe School Budget

School Board will discuss Monday how to come up with a budget that voters will find acceptable.

Tuckahoe School Board members will meet this coming Monday to sharpen their pencils and work on a revised budget that will be more palatable to voters, after a proposed $17.8 million budget went down in defeat at the polls on Tuesday. Although the budget proposal adhered to the new state-mandated tax cap, a different element of the new law applies — if the budget is rejected a second time, the tax levy must remain flat year-over-year. The initial budget proposal called for a 1.99 percent increase in the tax levy, amounting to $314,485 that would have to be cut out. The school district will have a shot on June 19 to offer voters an amended budget. With a turnout of 503 voters this week, the initial budget proposal was rejected by 47 votes. …

Nancy, please join the school on Monday night at 7pm. It would have been significantly more helpful if you would have asked questions before you pulled the trigger rather than voting and THEN asking questions. However, the misconceptions that were put out there by folks that exploited you for a quick vote will hopefully cleared up. It is not nice to deceive folks and I am sorry that happened, but…   more ›

All propositions approved.

Southampton School District voters, by an overwhelming margin, approved a $59.5 million budget on Tuesday, 566-260, and elected two new School Board members. Wilson won a four-year term and was sworn in immediately after the School Board certified the results, filling a vacancy left when Amy Pierson stepped down from the board to take a job with the district. In addition to the budget, all other ballot propositions …

Sag Harbor Budget Passes, No Changes to Board

Over in Sag Harbor, voters approved a $34 million school budget on Tuesday. Tuckahoe Voters Reject $17.8M Budget; Steudte Defeats Grindle

Proposition to expend funds replacing pipes also fails.

The Tuckahoe School District's proposed $17.8 million budget failed, 228-275, on Tuesday, and former School Board member Harald Steudte ousted incumbent Sharon Grindle by an 8-vote margin. Steudte received 220 votes to Grindle's 212. At least 71 voters abstained from deciding on a candidate. Under the proposed budget, the tax rate was projected to rise by 9.54 percent to $7.23 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The tax rate increase was pushed up by a 4.91 percent dip of the total assessed value of properties in the district, meaning the impact on homeowners whose property values decreased would have been less than 9.54 percent. Inclusive of collected property taxes and STAR reimbursement from New York State, the tax levy was budgeted to …

Haerter, Theinert To Be Inducted into Senate's Veterans Hall of Fame

Sen. Ken LaValle to honor fallen East End soldiers on May 22.

Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor and U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert of Shelter Island will be posthumously inducted into the State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame in Albany during a ceremony on May 22, Sen. Ken LaValle announced Tuesday. He killed a suicide bomber entering a base in Ramadi and saved 33 fellow marines and Iraqi police.  Haerter had been deployed to Joint Security Station Nasser, in the Sophia district of Ramadi, which at one point was the center of insurgency in that city. He and fellow Marine Cpl. Jonathan Yale, had been standing guard at an Entry Control Point when a large truck accelerated toward them, …
