With aquaculture and environmental impact concerns, village reps say they need more time to deliberate route of ferry proposed to connect Greenport and Sag Harbor.
Two days after the Sag Harbor Village Board approved legislation to permit a ferry service to operate from now through Oct. 31, linking Sag Harbor and Greenport, the Greenport Village Board has decided to discuss options as to where the ferry should dock and what route it should take. The decision came after several village residents, business people and a representative of Peconic Bay Water Jitney gave input on the proposed trial run of the ferry at a crowded special meeting held at the red schoolhouse on Front Street Thursday night. The ferry service would dock in Greenport and offer service to Sag Harbor's Long Wharf. Law allows for a pedestrian ferry service pilot program connecting the villages of Sag Harbor and Greenport.
In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, the Sag Harbor Village Board approved legislation to permit a ferry service to operate from now through October 31 linking Sag Harbor and Greenport, The Sag Harbor Express reports. The law accomodates Hampton Jitney President Geoffrey Lynch and Response Marine principal Jim Ryan's plans for the Peconic Bay Water Jitney, a seasonal passenger ferry service. They must still apply for a permit, according to The Express. After studying the impact on the village that the ferry has this summer, the Sag Harbor Village Board will decide whether to permit ferries again in the future. Learn more at sagharboronline.com.

Bishop campaign fires back after being knocked around at Altschuler press conference in Southampton.
Standing in front of an empty storefront on County Road 39 in Southampton, his opponent's hometown, congressional candidate Randy Altschuler explained Monday why he is again challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop after a narrow defeat two years ago. “I decided to seek a rematch with Congressman Bishop this year because many of the problems that spurred me to run in 2010 still exist,” said Altschuler, R-St. James. “In fact, they’ve gotten worse.” Altschuler was there to present his "10-Point Jobs Plan for Long Island," an addition to his campaign that he didn't have in 2010. He envisions Suffolk County becoming the Silicon Valley of the East Coast. Altschuler’s plan calls for: Altschuler also says he will form a small business advisory…

Inaugural Cash Mob East End held Sunday afternoon in Sag Harbor Village.
A "cash mob" hit Sag Harbor on Sunday afternoon, the first of what promises to be many visits to small businesses on the South Fork by Cash Mob East End in an effort to bring community shopkeepers a needed influx of money. The mobbers were prepared to spend $20 each, but did not learn until they arrived which business they would be headed to. They met at the windmill at the Long Wharf at 3 p.m., where instructions — as well as Cash Mob stickers — were given out to participants. The chosen business, Tim’s Prime Meats & Seafood, at 51 Division Street, is relatively new and one block off Main Street. The store offering quality meat and fish, olive oil and many prepared foods, was filled with mobbers. Even vegetarians and vegans had plenty to …
