what about your party's inability to keep the student loan rate from doubling. in fact, it doubledRead More from a rate that many would already consider usury in the prevailing interest rate environment?
K June 21, 2013 at 06:54 am
The words ''College'' and ''Affordability'' do not at all deserve to be in the same sentence.Read More Congress has done nothing at all to make college more affordable. The reality of this situation is that the Stafford loan interest rate is based on the 91 day Treasury Bill rate which since last year has decreased by half to .45%. If the government is loaning itself money at .45% there is no way in heck that they should be loaning it to families 7.5x that or 3.4%. They most certainly shouldn't be fighting amongst themselves about whether they should fleece the public even further by increasing their profit to 15x or 6.8%.
K June 21, 2013 at 06:59 am
The current standoff in Congress between Republicans and Democrats and between President Obama andRead More Congress over the Stafford subsidized loan rate is a shameless charade aimed at winning points before the November election. Current and future college students, and the millions of people, many now in middle age or even nearing retirement, who have been struggling with repaying massive student debt, should not be fooled, and should instead be uniting and taking to the streets to demand real action to reduce their debt burden and to make college truly affordable. The US government should not be in the business of making money off of college students and graduates. And further more, If America’s future depends upon having an educated workforce, then national policy should be geared towards making college affordable and towards educating the maximum number of people, not towards creating a nation of indentured servants.

The Stafford Loan rate is based on the 91 day Treasury rate which has dropped by half in the lastRead More year to .45%. To increase the rate of interest charged to 6.8% at a time when you can obtain a mortgage loan for much less takes this from usury to all out extortion. So for all of this ''pro-education'' fluff you hear from politicians, our government is anything but. Student borrowers are not protected by state usury laws, they are not allowed to declare bankruptcy if they cannot pay, the federal government, and any private collection firms that take over defaulted student loans are allowed to garnish not only a borrower’s wages without even having to go to court, but can also claim income tax refunds and even Social Security payments, raising the prospect that former students who cannot repay their student loans could be driven into the street in their old age as their retirement checks are stolen from them. Of course the government can also ruin a borrower’s credit and can prevent a graduate from getting a professional license. The government is even pressing colleges to withhold official transcripts from graduates who fall behind in their repayments, making it impossible for them to apply for jobs or for higher degrees. Given that tertiary educational institutions have been using the availability of student loans as a free pass to just keep jacking up their tuition and fees charged to struggling students (in 2010, for instance, the average public college tuition rate rose by 7.9%, or more than five times the 2010 inflation rate of 1.5%!), Congress and the White House might instead consider the idea of withholding loan funds and grants in aid or other forms of federal support from all colleges and universities that raise their tuition and fees in excess of the annual inflation rate.

Our veterans deserve to be compensated for their sacrifice. And, no, they should not have to wait.Read More Please continue to fight for them.

several grand jury subpoenas delivered in suffolk county to investigate the clean up and relatedRead More graft. stronger you say? maybe but that would be a direct result of the citizens realizing the government was nowhere to be found and when it was, it was characterized solely by incompetence. http://southampton.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/suffolk-notebook-da-investigates-countys-sandy-cleanup_3a43dcbe
Reality Check April 22, 2013 at 08:15 pm
PS...Would really be nice if Mr Bishop would work on fixing these problems versus writing on aRead More blog..IMHO! His comment "Before all the facts are known, it is premature to discuss a public policy response to this attack." make me wonder what is it that Congress is even doing????
Argile April 22, 2013 at 08:18 pm
@ Reality Check, MB lives in a sugar coated world all safe and secure in her mommy and daddy's home.Read More I don't think she has a damn clue what the real world is like other than what's on CNN and MSNBC.
Argile April 22, 2013 at 11:40 pm
Mary Beth said: "Their first impulse is always to make the greatest leap possible before theRead More facts are even in." Well the facts are in! CNN: Suspects motivated by religion Reactionary nonsense or MB in denial? I'll take choice B for $300 Alex....

If the companies are doing so well, buying back their own stock and paying a dividend, why not justRead More buy the stock and use the profits to offset your fuel price? BOOYAH!

And now Mr Bishop wants to be exempt from Obamacare, including all the other hacks in Congress thatRead More rammed it down our throats. "Let them eat cake"
Chuck Howley May 9, 2013 at 08:41 am
I commend you Congressman Bishop for the proposed legislation and I recommend that you continue toRead More push this legislation again and again. It is a shame that our government continues to handout billions of dollars to companies that are making billions on their own and don't need a public subsidy. Most importantly, drilling for oil instead of investing in new forms of energy is a clear example of the backward thinking of these corporate giants who can't see past tomorrow and are only interested in serving their stockholders and not the national interest. The subsidy does not go towards providing for our national defense. The US military stocks the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to cover our national defense needs. The Republicans in Congress are all owned by the oil companies, That is why you can't get your legislation passed. The Republican Party is the party of the business interest in this country and nothing else. Keep pushing this legislation and others like it.

Mr. Bishop, you're so concerned about rising taxes? You're about a decade late. The people that canRead More actually pay the bills, are leaving. The middle class is fleeing LI and it has nothing to do with republicans. Hope all your campaign contributions from your union friends, NYSUT, STA, etc. was worth your re election. http://www.newsday.com/long-island/education/elementary-school-enrollment-shrinking-across-li-data-show-1.4785698

"Falling enrollment is an added complication for districts struggling with rising personnelRead More costs, higher pension payments.." So what's your plan Mr. Bishop?
Anna April 1, 2013 at 07:53 pm
Why doesn't he do his job and trim all the fat on the public payroll in Suffolk!!! Keep blaming theRead More other guys for your bloated benefits and salriy increases to all the public employees.. You don't care at all about the middle class because people on the Suffolk payroll like the Commack payroll are hardly middle class when you factor in their LIFE LONG PENSION AND HEALTH BENEIFTS WORTH MILLIONS!!!! oh yeah they don't count those...

Based upon the dialogue among you, ralebird, and American Patriot, from Sunday through Saturday, weRead More need to ask you: Of just what are you a "doctor"? In one of your March 3rd posts, you referred to yourself as a "physician" ("I went to a meet and greet for Bishop, as a Physician I put a few tough questions to him regarding Obamacare..."), but NY State records do not indicate any physician licensed by the State of NY with your name, or anything even remotely close to your name. You have used terms such as "inveterate liar" and "complete falsehood", but based upon what American Patriot revealed from NY State sources, we have to wonder if those terms actually apply to you, instead.

Spending cuts have nothing to do with the economic realities our country faces. We have seenRead More unprecedented spending by the Federal government on some what dubious things with little to no substantiated returns for the last four years. Our nation now has to borrow $.46 of every dollar it spends placing a further debt burden on every American citizen and for what. Are you comfortable with the idea that every child born today comes into the world owing $200,000 and that debt will just go up? No, the time has come to reign in government, to curb the out of control spending and put an end to the Christmas-is-everyday mentality that now holds sway. Spending trillions of dollars you don't have is not a plan; it is national suicide.
Chuck Howley May 10, 2013 at 03:05 pm
I'm as disappointed as anyone to see that Congress could not come to a compromise on this issue. ItRead More is my view that the Republicans are taking a very hard line on this issue. It is issues such as this that cause the public to lose faith in Congress ever getting anything done. However, in times such as these, where unemployment is high, job creation is not happening at the speed necessary to trim the unemployment numbers, nor are the job being created great paying jobs, that Congress should not be cutting back on spending on the social safety programs while Hold to your guns Congressman.

An honest politician soon turns into a crooked politician, that's why they want to get into officeRead More in the first place and make us believe it's to help the people !!!!

I'm curious Mr. Bishop, what's it like to watch Long Island's middle class die a slow death fromRead More being overtaxed?
John K Massaro February 4, 2013 at 11:33 pm
I'm particularly disturbed by his "Two wrongs make a right" rhetoric myself...
Argile February 5, 2013 at 12:00 am
Hazel when you actually have the intelligence to vote for someone other than from what party theyRead More come from only then do you have the right to mock someone else. You are actually what's wrong with this country.
Argile February 5, 2013 at 12:09 am
Actually he hasn't been doing a great job. Look at his voting record. He's only good at acquiringRead More government money, taxpayer money. Which is fine for certain situations like disaster relief but that's all he's done. He's done nothing to improve economic growth on Long Island. My father who is a Korean war Veteran still can't get dental coverage. He worked till he was 76! So when you left wingers get on your high horse about how he treats Veterans it's all one big lie. I voted for him the first couple of times. Then my taxes started cranking up and he and various other politicians sat back and did nothing. And now we're stuck with him again. Enjoy your tax increases! BTW, did you enjoy your SS tax increase? http://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/44518/tim-bishop#.URBMW-RERIE
