Center Stage Holds Open Auditions for 'The Graduate'

Try out for roles made famous by Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman.

Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will perform Terry Johnson’s The Graduate in July — and open auditions are happening in less than two weeks with director Michael Disher The play is an adaptation of the 1963 novel by Charles Webb and the 1967 film directed by Mike Nichols. It had a successful run at London's West End in 2001 and opened on Broadway in 2002 starring Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone. The iconic film starred Dustin Hoffman as protagonist Benjamin Braddock, a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life. He is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). Jerry Hall, Amanda Donohoe, Morgan …

From Westhampton to Montauk, local arts nonprofits receive grants.

Drawing on funds collected through the Suffolk County Hotel/Motel Room Tax, the County Legislature and County Executive Steve Bellone awarded South Fork arts organizations $72,000 on April 24. The tax is designed to support cultural programs and activities that enhance the tourism industry. More than a quarter of a million dollars in competitive cultural arts grants will be distributed to 39 organizations across the county, including 12 on the South Fork. Here are the grants for South Fork arts nonprofits: “World-class museums like the Parrish Art Museum and performing arts centers like Guild Hall are a vibrant part life on the East End of Long Island,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman, I-Montauk. “These facilities enrich the lives of …

Sorry Gerard, but your comment is way off base. How can you assert that no "real local arts organizations" received funding? Guild Hall has served East Hampton for over 80 years. Yesterday we had 800 local Artist-Members attend the Opening of the Annual Artist Member Exhibition in the afternoon, and Uncle Vanya opened last night in the theater - a production that employs and features 20 local …   more ›

Artist Completes 3rd Mural for Hospital Before Reuniting With Spouse in Military

Springs decorative artists donate mural to Southampton Hospital ER's pediatric care room.

Working down to the wire, the artists of Heather Dunn & Co. recently put the finishing touches on their third mural donated to Southampton Hospital, just weeks before the lead artist leaves the East End to be reunited with his spouse, who is returning from serving in Afghanistan. The Springs-based interior decorative arts firm, a family company composed of Heather Dunn-Kostura, her husband Richard Kostura and her stepson Thom Kostura, started the project April 4, in the pediatric care room of the hospital’s ER, leaving a short window of time to complete the mural before Thom had to go. The team wrapped up the project last Wednesday, April 18. They previously painted an extensive mural in the hospital basement depicting the beach and a …

Bay Street Theatre Strikes 10-Year Lease Accord; Search Continues for Permanent Home

Bay Street directors announce Tuesday afternoon that they will remain at Long Wharf for near future.

The directors of Bay Street Theatre and the landlord of their Long Wharf facility have inked a new deal that will keep the stage lights on for up to 10 years while Bay Street finds a permanent home. Bay Street Artistic Director Murphy Davis said Tuesday afternoon that after nearly two decades of three-year leases, the theater came to terms with landlord Patrick Malloy for a long-term deal. The agreement includes an opt-out that allows Bay Street to move out without a penalty when a new theater is ready. The new agreement allows the Bay Street directors the breathing room to do their due diligence as they explore options, Davis said. "It really gives us the ability, without being up against the gun, to really investigate all the different …

'Royal Pains' Seeks Hamptons Extras for Season 4

Concierge doctor show will film on the South Fork starting this month.

USA Network cable show "Royal Pains," about a physician who makes housecalls for the Hamptons elite as well as the everyman, is returning to the area to shoot scenes for its fourth season — and a casting agency is looking for local people to be background actors. Grant Wilfley Casting, of Manhattan, says that USA will be in Westhampton on April 30 and Southampton on May 10 and is in need of "people with the affluent look and the wardrobe to portray the high-society Hamptons elite." There may be additional South Fork filming dates as well. Both union and non-union actors are sought to portray Hamptonites, socialites, model-types, "ladies-who-lunch," beach-goers, yachtsman, golfers, tennis players, owners of ultra high-end cars, bankers, …

What Our Readers Think: 'Legs' Brought to a Heel

Controversial sculpture in Sag Harbor denied permission to stay displayed on side of Madison Street home.

"Legs," a 16-foot tall sculpture by the late artist Larry Rivers, has been ordered to be removed from Ruth Vered and Janet Lehr's Madison Street home by Sept. 15, according to The Sag Harbor Express, and Patch readers had a lot to say about the Sag Harbor Zoning Board of Appeals' move. Some will not miss the legs: SagHarborBob said, "I'll be glad to see the legs gone, and the issue closed. Nothing against Ruth & Janet, but those legs are really ugly." Iloveeasthampton said, "Glad to see them go." Others cracked jokes: Preliator quipped, "These legs are made for walking...." While others disagreed with the ZBA's decision and lamented the loss of "Legs" (Though it must be noted that Vered says the fight isn't over): East Ender said, "The …

I read some of these comments with such abrasive insults as "simpletons, idiots and pervert"! I think it ironic that CD can say what he or she wants to the extreme, yet he or she objects to someone else's opinions. In this case LEGS. We are listening to you, you have the right to say your piece, yet Vered and Larry don't?. I'm confused. Free speech or no free speech?, up or down?, in or out?, yes…   more ›

Proceeds of the auction will benefit the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center, The Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital and Lucia’s Angels. Admission, including wine, beer and appetizers, is $50 at the door, but advance tickets have a reduced price of $45. Tickets are …

In Sag Harbor, 'Legs' Brought to Heel

The Sag Harbor Village Zoning Board of Appeals says Larry Rivers sculpture must come down, The Sag Harbor Express reports.

"Legs," a 16-foot tall sculpture by the late artist Larry Rivers, has been ordered to be removed from Ruth Vered and Janet Lehr's Madison Street home by Sept. 15, according to The Sag Harbor Express. The Express reports that the Sag Harbor Village Zoning Board of Appeals agreed with the building inspector that the artwork, which is mounted to the side of the house and illuminated at night, is an unlawful accessory structure. "Legs" has been set just 1 foot back from the sidewalk, where 35 feet is required. Get the story at sagharboronline.com.

No - just recognizing that the decisions made are not always easy and just as there is disagreement here, its not a simple thing to get the consenses of a community. There is not always a "wrong" and a "right" - just differing opinions. I'm sure the members of the board thought they were doing what was best. Their opinion. It's impossible to please everyone and there will always be people who …   more ›
