UPDATE: Woman Burned in Water Mill Shed Fire

Victim airlifted for medical treatment after suffering burns in a fire, which the Southampton fire chief says included an explosion.

A woman was burned on her face and hands in a large shed fire at 70 Water Mill Towd Road in Water Mill on Thursday morning.

responded and knocked down the blaze in the large shed within 30 minutes of the call at 11:22 a.m., according to Chief Rodney "Chip" Pierson.

An explosion was reported before firefighters responded, Pierson said. According to the chief, equipment for reloading firearms, including acetone and gun powder, was reported to be in the shed, which he said was "completely destroyed."

The woman was reported to be alert and conscious when police and fire officials arrived on scene. The treated the woman at the scene. It was not immediately clear what she was doing in the shed, the chief said.

He said the shed was 20 by 15 feet and is about 30 to 40 feet from the house at 70 Water Mill Town Road. Smoke could be seen from Montauk Highway in Water Mill.

's Rapid Intervention Team was called to assist in case firefighters needed help. An engine from the was called to standby at the Windmill Lane firehouse.

A Suffolk County helicopter was called to land at the Water Mill ball field to airlift the patient to Stony Brook University Medical Center. The was called to standby for the landing and the Bridgehampton Ambulance Company was called at about 12:30 p.m. to help rehabilitate firefighters at the scene.

Water Mill Towd Road was closed between Head of Pond and the property. Firefighters were packing up at about 1 p.m.

Pierson said the Southampton Town fire marshal's office is investigating the fire.
