VIDEOS: 1938 Hurricane Ravages the Hamptons

"Long Island Express" destroyed thousands of homes.

As Hurricane Irene barrels towards a possible direct hit on the East End, people are already drawing comparisons with the Great Hurricane of 1938, which devastated the Hamptons and much of New England.

That hurricane, dubbed the Long Island Express, was a Category 3 storm when it hit, and it toppled homes, uprooted thousands of trees and killed more than 700 people through New England, according to research done by Suffolk County Community College.

Though the storm far predates the information age, a lot of footage from the storm damage can be found on YouTube, uploaded by various historical archives.
