UPDATE: Two Injured in Small-Plane Crash

Plane goes down in a Sagaponack farm field.

Two men are in critical condition after crashing a small plane in a Sagaponack cornfield Sunday morning.

The single-engine fixed-wing plane is in the middle of the corn stalks on the White family's property near Sagg Main Street and Bridge Lane. Rescuers were only able to find it by sound, according to Sgt. Louis Scott. The plane went down at 10:13 a.m., police said.

One victim pulled from the wreckage was airlifted to , while the second was taken via ambulance to , where he was stabilized, then transferred to Stony Brook, according to police.

Police said the the victims' identities are being withheld pending notification of their families.

Barbara White, whose family owns the land, said she saw the plane "sputtering" over the fields, and then shortly thereafter she heard a loud thud.

Biplane pilots gather at the nearby Foster Farm on Sagg Main each weekend and many of them were in the area on Sunday morning. Biplanes have fixed wings, similar to the design of the first aircraft by the Wright brothers. 

The plane that crashed was reportedly a biplane made in the 1940s, according to witnesses who had seen it flying.

The responded with engines and rescue workers to help get the occupants out of the plane, according to chatter on emergencies frequencies. New York State police also assisted at the scene and the Federal Aviation Administration responded to investigate the cause of the crash.
