Town Police Log: Woman Had Metal Knuckle Knife
The following information was supplied by the Southampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.
Southampton Town police reports for east of the Shinnecock Canal for Jan. 23 to Jan. 30.
Criminal Possession of a Weapon
• Tania Copenhavern, 39, of Calverton, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony, on Jan. 29 after she was stopped on County Road 39 in Southampton near Tuckahoe Road for a traffic infraction, police said. Police said Copenhaver was pulled over for moving from a lane unsafely when it was discovered that she had in her possession a metal knuckle knife, which is illegal in New York. According to the New York State Penal Law, "metal knuckle knife" means "a weapon that, when closed, cannot function as a set of metal knuckles, nor as a knife and when open, can function as both a set of metal knuckles as well as a knife."
Driving While Intoxicated
• Nichol Banks, 38, of Southampton, was charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, on Jan. 29 he was pulled over for speeding and swerving on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays. Police say Banks had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and glassy eyes.
Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle
• A 18-year-old student from New York City was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor, on Jan. 28. Police said Margaret Miller was pulled over in Sagaponack on Sagg Pond Court. Police reported that Miller did not have permission to drive the vehicle.
