Shinnecock Reservation Evacuating Due to Hurricane Sandy

Shinnecock community directed to Red Cross shelter in Hampton Bays.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation has ordered the evacuation of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Hampton Bays High School for evacuees of flood prone low lying areas of Southampton Town.

Tribal security is going house-to-house to execute the evacuation order.

Evacuees are advised to pack pillows, blankets, snacks, flashlights, extra batteries, reading materials and necessary medications.

The Southampton Town Supervisor has declared a state of emergency and ordered the evacuation of Dune Road and other flood prone areas.

Similarly, Southampton Village has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Meadow Lane and Gin Lane, and all residents south of Ox Pasture Road are asked to voluntarily evacuate.

The Long Island Power Authority says residents should expect to lose power for a number of days.
