Sagaponack Puts Kibosh on Rennert Estate Construction

Building inspector says work was being done without a permit.

The building inspector has issued a stop work order at billionaire Ira Rennert's oceanfront estate, purported to be the largest residence in the United States.

"It came to my attention that they were pouring concrete there," building inspector John Woudsma said Friday. He said he saw a concrete truck at the property, but found no building permit on file for the estate, at 281 Daniels Ln, and issued a stop work order on April 11.

"You must obtain a building permit or remove what has been constructed immediately," Woudsma wrote to Rennert's Blue Turtles Inc. that day.

In a letter dated April 29, the village asked for acknowledgment that the stop work order has been received, after the return receipt on the earlier notice came back unsigned.

Woudsma said reports that Rennert was building a museum are false.

"We have not heard anything about a museum," he said. "The only place I heard anything about a museum is on Page 6."

The village will not know what Rennert plans to build until he submits a building permit application, Woudsma said.
