Sag Harbor resident and jazz teacher Hal McKusick died Wednesday after a prolonged illness, Ross Head of School Michele Claeys informed the school community Thursday.
Born June 1, 1924, in Medford, Mass., he was 87 years old. McKusick was an acclaimed saxophonist who was a member of the CBS Studio Orchestra and performed with many jazz legends during his long and distinguished career.
"Hal was an incredible and renowned musician, artist and teacher and will be missed by many, both within and outside Ross School," Claeys said. "Our thoughts are with Hal's family and all those who were fortunate enough to know and work with him. I have so many fond memories of Hal, as a charming colleague and neighbor, an enchanting performer, and a loyal friend."

McKusick also took up woodworking and restored his historic Sag Harbor home himself.
