Repeat DWI Offender Arrested After Chase, Crash

Police say man who led Southampton Village police in a pursuit Tuesday has three previous DWI convictions.

A Water Mill man was arrested Tuesday on his fourth DWI since 1987, after leading police officers on a 4-mile chase that ended when he drove into a rock wall and trees, according to .

Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said that police responded to a 911 call at 4:21 p.m. Tuesday of an intoxicated man trying to drive a 1984 red Jaguar in the Schmidt’s Market parking lot on North Sea Road. When police arrived, Lamison said, 53-year-old James Burdette Robles got onto North Sea Road headed northbound, and refused to pull over.

The pursuit continued until the intersection of North Sea Mecox Road and Kings Lane, where Robles failed to negotiate a turn and crashed, police said.

volunteers extricated Robles from the Jaguar, and the transported him to . After he was treated and released, Robles was arrested, police said.

Robles was charged with a felony count of driving while intoxicated, due to his previous DWI convictions in 1987, 1989 and 2007, police said, adding that he has a total of 19 arrests on his record since 1977. He also charged with a number of misdemeanors: unlawful fleeing from a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree.
